The Star reports that Nepalese foreign workers can now be hired directly, thus eliminating the need for middlemen. All deals will be done through government-to-government (G2G) initiative, according Human Resources Minister M. Kulasegaran.

Kulasegaran said the government had just concluded the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government of Nepal to allow them to send employees, including domestic maids to Malaysia.

"We are doing away with all of the middlemen and instead will be using the G2G in our direct recruitment exercise," - M. Kulasegaran.

In July, The Star reported that the Nepal government barred its workers from coming to Malaysia.

The move comes as their government expressed its dissapointment with restrictive immigration requirements faced by Nepalese workers before they could be employed in Malaysia.

This includes to go through a private company for a medical and security check-ups as a part of the visa requirement.

Currently, there are more than 500,000 Nepalese workers in Malaysia.

150,000 of them are employed as security guards and the rest work in construction and manufacturing.

Kulasegaran said that a team from the Human Resources Ministry was on the way to Bangladesh to discuss matters in relation to the MoU which will be signed with the country.

"The Nepal MoU has been concluded and they will be able to send their workers immediately. For other countries including Bangladesh, Indonesia and India, we are still negotiating," Kulasegaran said.

This is a part of the country's effort to eliminate the need of recruiting foreign workers through agents or companies.

Malaysiakini reported that Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said the system of recruiting foreign workers through agents or companies will be abolished soon.

The task which is now outsourced by the Home Ministry to over 100 companies will be taken over by the Human Resource Ministry through Private Employment Agencies (PEA). PEA will ensure the intake of foreign workers is better managed according to existing regulations and law.

Malaysia will also implement a multi-tier levy system for the hiring of foreign workers by next year.
